Week 4 -Blog Reflection - Educational Research

How do you believe educational research can inform and improve teaching practices?

Educational research plays an important role in informing and improving teaching practices because it helps educators move beyond assumptions and make decisions grounded in evidence. Research gives teachers insight into what supports student learning, engagement, and achievement, while also helping them reflect on how their own practices may need to evolve. It can guide choices about instruction, assessment, classroom culture, and professional development. For example, research in culturally responsive teaching shows that when teachers receive intentional professional development, their perceptions of students can shift and they begin to use more inclusive and effective strategies in their classrooms. That matters because it connects research directly to practice and shows that teaching can improve when educators are given both evidence and support to grow.

In your opinion, what are some of the most pressing challenges facing education today that require further research?

In my opinion, some of the most pressing challenges facing education today that require further research are equity, teacher preparedness, and student engagement. There is still a need to better understand how to ensure all students have access to rigorous, meaningful learning experiences, especially students from historically marginalized backgrounds. Research also continues to point to the importance of teacher confidence and cultural competence, which suggests that preparation and ongoing development remain critical. Another pressing issue is how schools can better connect learning to students’ lived experiences while maintaining high expectations and strong outcomes. These challenges are important because they influence not only academic achievement, but also whether students feel seen, supported, and prepared for life beyond school.

What is one question you have about action research as it relates to your current or future profession?

One question I have about action research as it relates to my current and future profession is: How can action research be used in workplace learning environments to identify whether leadership practices, onboarding experiences, or training interventions are truly improving learner confidence, engagement, and performance over time?
